The Stay-At-Home Mom: It’s challenging enough to survive on two incomes in this day and age. When the difficult (and of course rewarding) decision is made to stay at home with your children, what can you do to fill the income void in your household? Your children are the most important things in the world to you. They deserve your full attentionand you have gladly chosen to stay home and care for them. You know that you have made the right decision. Your choice to be a stay at home mother has come with a price though. Careful budgeting alone cannot offset that missing second income. Yes, you and your husband are getting by and your family is enjoying quality time together, but you have sacrificed income and benefits to raise your children. Depending on your profession, your financial sacrifice can be very significant after a few years. In Ann Crittenden's book "The Price of Motherhood," she calculated that a couple that once earned over $80,000 annually could lose over $1 million dollars in lifetime earnings after they have a child and the woman leaves work and stays at home. Your retirement is in jeopardy as well. No matter what level your previous earnings were, there are long term consequences on your finances for the years spent raising children instead of earning a paycheck. Aside from salary, you are not earning any pension benefits from an employer or medical insurance, both of which are quite valuable. And few women when they decide to stay home consider that they will cease to accrue any social security benefits from the federal government. No income for you means that your benefit rating with social security is stagnating. It's a shame that there has to be such a cost for you to stay at home with your children. You certainly value your work as a mom. It's nice having time to nurture your children's education and interests. You even get to have fun, and you do not envy the scheduling hassles that working mothers face as they juggle job commitments and children's appointments. You are not alone either. More women are deciding to leave the career track and stay at home with their children. There is a growing trend for families to decide to make it with only one person working outside the home. A report from the U.S. Census Bureau in 2001 showed that in 1998 59% of mothers with infants worked at a full time job, but that had dropped to 55% in 2000, only 2 years later. The appeal of actually being the one to raise your children is undeniable and more families are pursuing this important goal. Being a stay at home mom has many positive points, but you still miss being able to earn an income. You want to continue developing your skills and creativity. Maintaining your professional skills that you worked hard to get before motherhood nags at the back of your mind. You wish you had a way to transform your time into money without compromising your need to be at home. You can enjoy the security of a second income again. There is a revolution starting in our society. People are deciding that they don't want to struggle through a traffic jam every day and spend 10 hours at an office away from their families in order to live. It's time for you to start learning how people are earning a comfortable living from their homes. You can start a home based business, raise your children, and have a profitable professional existence at the same time. Bringing in a second income and avoiding childcare costs would be doubly profitable. Think of all the important things in your financial life that you won't have to put off anymore. Taking nicer vacations Getting that bigger house your growing family needs Saving for retirement Funding your children's college education After starting your home based business you won't have to scrimp and save so much. Yes, youwill still bargain hunt because it's smart and you're good at it, but you won't have to feel guilty about that occasional dinner out. There is no arguing that the work you do as a mother is exceedingly valuable. The salary research company Salary.com even attempted to calculate what a salary for a stay at home mother should be. After factoring in everything from childcare, transportation services, accounting, laundry, cooking, management, and much more, Salary.com came up with a figure of $90,000 a year. This sounds like a lot but it was based on a 90 hour work week. As nice as it is to know that your work as a mother is worth nearly six figures, there is no salary fairy out there that is magically going to start writing you checks. You need to take action and earn money your own way. The way to do this is with your own home based business. As your own boss, you will be able to integrate earning an income into your other valuable and important duties. With the income from your home based business, you will be able to enjoy the benefits of financial security. You won't have to worry so much if your husband loses his job. With your business income you could even give him the freedom to pursue a career change that he has been dreaming of. In a dead end Real Estate Career?
Pumping Up Your Real Estate Career If you're a real estate agent, you are well aware of the downsides that people outside the field know little or nothing about. Before you could begin working for a broker, you had to acquire a thorough knowledge of real estate law, terminology and math. Regardless of which state you live in, you had to pass a test for your license, and pay a hefty fee for the privilege of holding it. While you may not have had much trouble finding an office to work through, you might not have expected to have to pay for advertisements for your listings and possibly for desk space at the agency. Health insurance? Maybe, if you're lucky, you'll have the opportunity to pay the full premium for a group policy. Of course, you've got to sell some stuff before you can afford to do that. You have to get lots of listings. You have to close sales and set aside an emergency fund for the tough months when few or no sales come your way. Otherwise, you won't be able to pay your own bills, much less the ones the broker keeps reminding you of. Talk about an independent contractor! Not only that. You sometimes get the feeling you're surrounded by vultures. Maybe not in your own office-but in the ones down the street and around the block and everywhere else in town. Yes, you're well aware that you're in a heavy-competition business. You've got someone really interested in a $450,000 home you showed them last week. They're practically ready to put the money down today-only when you check to make sure it's still on the market, you find out it sold yesterday. The disappointed couple doesn't want to see anything else, they say, edging their way to the door. You just know someone else showed them their second-choice, and they're on their way to that other office now. Of course, you're here to serve the client. That's what it's all about. That's why you work weekends and evenings, when it's convenient for them to see the properties. That's why you give every potential buyer your home phone and cell phone. Better that they call you at the most inconvenient time than take a chance on someone else closing the sale. Sometimes it seems as if you've got no time to yourself. Added to that is something that even people outside the industry know: the real estate market swings with the economy. Everyone knows about buyer's markets and seller's markets. When the fed inches the interest rate up yet again, you know that will affect sales. There are fast-inflating bubbles and bursting bubbles. And of course that means that your income is dependent on the same economy that drives the real estate market. As hectic as the real estate business is, there is some rather excruciating down time. Like the Sunday afternoon you spend hosting an Open House that only a few vaguely-interested people drift through, probably to get decorating ideas or just to "see what it's like inside." Or "phone duty" at the office, which amounts to little more than being an unpaid receptionist. If only there was a way to make some money during that down time-something you could do no matter where you were or what time of day or night it was. Guess what-there is, and it's called a home-based business. It's like having a safety net to catch you during the months when the commission checks are small or nonexistent. The hours you work at a home-based business are completely flexible, so if Mrs. McGinty calls to look at a listing, you can drop everything to take care of your potential buyer, and get back to your second-income business later on. There is no time-clock to punch, no boss to answer to except yourself. You're in complete control of this business. After all, it's your own! While called home-based, you can be taking care of business no matter where you are. All you need is a computer and a phone. Well, you've always got those with you anyway, right? Instead of wasting an afternoon at an Open House, you can use the time to generate income. Phone duty at the office? You can get out your laptop and make the time pay you, even if your broker won't. Home-based businesses are exploding as a way to supplement the incomes of people who work on commission. Knowing you have a second source of income without the hassles of a boss, commuting, and rigid scheduling is giving commissioned workers the sense of security that no other second job can. "The Secret" Principles can help You achieve Success
Oprah Winfrey - a multi-billionaire and one of the most generous people in the world-featured The Secret twice on her show. Oprah said she'd been using The Secret's principles all her life without knowing it, sometimes seeing her dreams come true almost effortlessly. Jack Canfield, co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series and teacher, life coach and motivational speaker, says he arrived at his enviable position in life because he knew and used the principles of The Secret. John Demartini, a former surfer/panhandler who dropped out of school at age 14 because of disabling dyslexia, later learned the philosophy behind The Secret and graduated magna cum laude with a doctoral degree. Others who devoted show time to The Secret include Larry King, Ellen DeGeneres, TheToday Show, and Nightline. All over the world, standing-room-only seminars are teaching the principles of The Secret and showing people how to change their lives. The Secret is literally a life-altering phenomenon that is changing the lives of people who live not just in the United States, but all over the world. The book and DVD have made the top of every best seller list, and have sold over a million copies. In an interview with USA Today, author Rhonda Byrne explained that she discovered the ancient secret to getting everything you want through her study of religious and philosophical texts. As the tagline for the DVD says, The Secret "has traveled through centuries to reach you." Byrne gleaned ideas from great thinkers and creators, scientists and philosophers, artists and writers. It is very likely that many famous people from the past knew this universal law-for example Beethoven, Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, Leonardo DaVinci, and Abraham Lincoln. You do not have to belong to any particular religious group to learn, use and benefit from The Secret. It's for everyone, regardless of their spiritual beliefs, IQ, education, current circumstances or station in life. In fact, the author discovered and mastered The Secret when she herself was going through a very difficult time. It helped her turn her life around, and she is eager to share what she learned with as many people as possible. Will you be one of them? Many people who are convinced The Secret works have watched the DVD and read the book again and again. Why? Because they say that each time they discover another secret, something new.
